NORTHWOOD, Ohio, February 19, 2003 – NAMSA, the world leader in the non-clinical testing of medical devices, has recently acquired the Exakt® Histological Processing System for the testing and evaluation of implanted medical devices. The new system will first be implemented at NAMSA’s recently completed laboratory and world headquarters facility in Northwood, Ohio near Toledo but accessible to NAMSA clients worldwide.
This unique equipment allows hard implants such as metallic stents to be processed while in intimate contact with surrounding tissue. It also allows for routine high quality processing of soft or hard implants in hard tissue such as bone. Without this technology, an evaluation of the device would require de-calcifying the bone, or removing the implant altogether from the bone or tissue which risks creating an artifact at the device/tissue interface.
"The Exakt® System will improve our overall capabilities in the area of histological processing and create new opportunities for us to better serve our clients," states NAMSA CEO and President Jeffrey Blair. "It represents a significant investment in new technology and provides us with a state-of-the-art approach to this part of our business."
With the Exakt® System, the pathologist is able to evaluate in detail the interface between the medical device or material in intimate contact with tissue. Moreover, remarkable photographs can be generated by the system that are suitable for regulatory agency submissions and medical publishing.
