Gram Stain and Colony Morphology

This test is selected to determine both the microscopic and macroscopic morphology of an unknown microorganism. The Gram stain is typically the first step in the preliminary identification of an organism.  Gram staining is a valuable diagnostic tool; however, not all bacteria can be definitively classified by this technique (see MG010 and MG846).
